"I heard a voice from heaven saying, 'Son, let this woman be a bride to you in the restoration of my people. Let her be a mother for these people, regenerating souls through the salvation of spirit and water.'" (Hildegard of Bingen, Scivias)

Racism in Church Art

Funny, but also makes a very serious point even as it fails by showing Jesus as a white dude, albeit with brown hair and a big nose. Jesus, Mary, and all his disciples were brown Afro-Asiatic Jews. The constant European-American depiction of them as white, doubled down when villains are dark-skinned and/or visibly Jewish, is a potent means of carrying on both anti-Semitism and racism in church and society. Isn't this montage by Vincent Barzoni stunning?

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you, because by your life, death, and resurrection you have redeemed the world!
